Extra Curricular Activities

The role of a great school is one that develops the whole child both academically and socially. Hill West prides itself in developing exceptionally well-rounded, Rights-respecting, proactive pupils who are confident and active members of both the school and, more importantly, the wider community. We pride ourselves on allowing pupils opportunities to develop confidence, an innovative approach to challenges, an aspirational outlook, whilst being enthusiastic and engaging young people. The numerous extra-curricular activities on offer ensure that all pupils are actively involved in developing themselves in areas other than classroom learning. The wide variety ensures that there is something for everyone. In addition, the strong emphasis on music, drama and sports ensure there are annual concerts, plays and competitions.

The four residential visits (one in each year of KS2) allows our Key Stage 2 pupils the opportunity to experience being away from home, whilst challenging themselves to explore the great outdoors. Ask any pupil at Hill West what they remember most about their schooldays and it is most likely to be something outside of the classroom that provokes the most vivid of memories.

At Hill West, we believe that our pupils learn as much from their interaction with one another as they do from their academic studies, and that a full programme of extra-curricular activities is an essential part of their education. The real value of the extra-curricular programme is to teach children how to cope with failure. If they play sport, for example, it is important for them to experience both winning and losing, as these are vital life lessons. Resilience is an essential attribute for all young people. When pupils are taken outside of their comfort zone, whether on a stage, in a concert or working in the community, that is where real learning takes place.

We believe that extra curricular clubs should add value to the overall school experience. Our clubs are a great opportunity for children to improve their fitness, make new friends and have fun. After school clubs should be something all children want to stay late for, which is why we plan a variety of different activities across the school year. It’s a great opportunity for children to gain an extra hour of exercise outside of PE or to sing in our school choir alongside other talented singers or to have fun in dance class with their chums.

We have a whole variety of clubs and activities available throughout the year for children to attend with the aims of developing their skills and confidence. We meet with external providers to ensure that our clubs meet the needs of the children and other clubs are run by our own members of staff. We provide different and interesting activities, ranging from sports such as hockey and archery to choir and science.

At Hill West Primary School we believe that all children should feel welcome at our extra curricular clubs regardless of their ability. We also feel that it is important for us to provide opportunities for children to take part in competitive sports.
